St John's Wort Tincture, mild depression and pain

Midwinter blues - we've all heard of them and many of us suffer from them. As the days grow shorter and the evenings lengthen we miss the daylight and the effect that daylight has on our pituitary gland and endocrine system which triggers various hormones. Taking St John's Wort tincture has been found to help with this condition (mild depression, mid winter blues) also known as SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder).

Bottled sunshine

We call it 'bottled sunshine' because the plant basks in the sunshine throughout the summer months with its profusion of sunshine yellow flowers, so when we harvest and process the herb at midsummer we capture the 'sunshine effect'.

Scientific Studies

St John's Wort, so called because it flowers on St John's Day (summer solstice), strengthens the nerves and may help with mild to moderate depression. Over 40 scientific studies have shown St John's Wort being effective in the treatment of mild to moderate depression, appearing to work in about 70 per cent of cases. St John's Wort can take a fortnight to have any effect, possibly up to a month, however some immediate lift is not uncommon. St John's Wort compares very favourably with prescription drugs, working just as well but with significantly fewer side effects. (White and Foster, Rodale, 2000)

St John's Wort for Anxiety

St John's Wort may help if you're feeling overwhelmed and anxious, suffering with premenstrual tension or have nerve or muscle pain

Lakeland Herbs St John's Wort tincture is made with biodynamic fresh herbs using the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia formula. The whole process is certified by Demeter because the plant retains the biodynamic properties throughout the procedure into the finished product. There are no chemicals used at all, either to clear the tincture or interfere with the biodynamic life force of the ingredient.

The potency of a tincture is not necessarily directly related to the input of ingredients. We input ingredients according to the BHP formula but then we leave it to brew in the mash from one to 3 months resulting in a totally saturated solution. This cannot be made any stronger even by adding more herbs, full saturation is full saturation. It could be made into a concentrate by extracting the alcohol, as in a fluid extract, but this may also remove the ethereal elements of the tincture (because the alcohol is needed to capture these in the first place).

Remember to consult your healthcare practitioner if using medication
